This is the first Pan American gold medal a Dominican athlete has won in judo. Her gold was the fifth gold medal for the Dominican Republic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her first interview, she said she trained, but she was surprised by winning the gold. Her first match was against Colombia, second against Chile, and her last was against a Cuban athlete. She is from Bayaguana in Monte Plata province. When she was 21, she had won the gold medal in the Central American &amp; Caribbean Games held in Barranquilla, Colombia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her teammate, 29-year old Wander Mateo, won gold in his event on the next day. His gold was also a first in men&#8217;s judo for the Dominican Republic.
