The highly controversial US$132 million loan recently approved by the Congress is being put on hold, according to Finance Minister Vicente Bengoa, who is now calling it “a big mistake.” The loan is widely speculated to be rife with over-priced and questionable goods for the National Police. In fact, the government’s economic team was not involved in the discussions of the purchases nor the loan.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, President Fernandez appointed a small committee to look into the loan and the government purchases for the police. According to Bengoa, the government’s decision not to make use of the approved loan was based on the fact that there was no public bidding for such a project. He did say that the police would be better equipped, but the process would have to be done in a transparent manner.
