The funding is to support the Dominican Red Cross through health and hygiene promotional activities. The assistance includes the delivery of hygiene kits, water containers and mosquito nets. The funds will be used to strengthen the activities of the Ministry of Public Health through the maintenance of spraying machines and the purchase of insecticide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The humanitarian aid will directly benefit 12,500 people in the provinces of San Jos\u00e9 de Ocoa and Greater Santo Domingo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The funding is part of the EU&#8217;s overall contribution to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Emergency Disaster Relief Fund (DREF).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The European Union explains that in July 2019, the Ministry of Public Health of the Dominican Republic declared an epidemiological alert due to the continued increase in dengue cases in the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the last four weeks there has been an increase of 5,548 cases reported in epidemiological week 29, and 8,555 in epidemiological week 33. These figures show that there has been a peak in the outbreak in recent weeks that has led to the need to strengthen the response.
