Elcarte said that typically this type of violence was classed as correction by the parents. She advocated for parental education to correct the situation. For instance, she noted that three-year-olds are not capable of \u201csitting still\u201d for long periods of time. She said there is a fundamental need for parents to understand exactly at what stage of development their child is at, so they can adequately talk and try to listen to the child. The consequences of not listening and \u201ccorrecting\u201d are depressed children, with psychological problems and who tend to become abusers themselves.
