More members of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) have announced their resignation from the party, following the resignation of former President Leonel Fern\u00e1ndez on Sunday 20 October 2019. Political analysts say 25% of the party members could leave to back Fern\u00e1ndez. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Central Committee member and president of the Permanent Conference of Latin American and Caribbean Political Parties (Coppal), Manolo Pichardo has resigned, due to what he called the departure from the original ideas and values that were in place when the party was created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other members of the PLD Political Committee that have resigned to join Fern\u00e1ndez in the proposed La Fuerza del Pueblo new party are former Vice President Rafael Alburquerque;, Minister Without Portfolio Bautista Rojas Gomez; former attorney general Radham\u00e9s Jim\u00e9nez, former Interior & Police Minister Franklin Almeyda Rancier and former public health minister Bautista Rojas Gomez. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other resignations from the PLD in less than a week are Gustavo Rojas Lara, Joaqu\u00edn Ger\u00f3nimo Berroa, Henry Mer\u00e1n, Dem\u00f3stenes Mart\u00ednez and Freddy P\u00e9rez. Also senators Manuel G\u00fcichardo (Valverde) and Prim Pujals Nolasco (Saman\u00e1). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deputies that have resigned from the PLD to follow Fern\u00e1ndez are:
\nRub\u00e9n Maldonado, Carlos Guzm\u00e1n, Adalgisa F\u00e1tima Pujols (Santo Domingo province), Juan Carlos Qui\u00f1ones (Puerto Plata), Juan Compr\u00e9s (Duarte); Jos\u00e9 Luis Cosme (Maria Trinidad S\u00e1nchez); Dem\u00f3stenes Mart\u00ednez (Santiago), Orlando Espinosa (San Crist\u00f3bal); Marcos Cross (representing Spain) and Levin Suriel (representing the USA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A report in Listin Diario highlights how the resignation of Fern\u00e1ndez and announcement he is leaving to form another political party changes the composition of forces in Congress. This will affect important bills, such as the National Budget, that are pending for approval this year. There are 222 legislators, of which 32 are senators (31 provinces and the National District) and 190 deputies (178 for provinces and the National District, five national deputies and 7 overseas deputies). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
