It is capable of extracting 50,000 kg of trash per day – even reaching 100,000 kg per day under optimized conditions.

The mastermind for The Ocean Cleanup, Chris Worp said he was inspired to send The Interceptor to the Dominican Republic after seeing the avalanche of plastics that flooded down the Ozama River in Santo Domingo after heavy rains.

The Ocean Cleanup aims to tackle the world’s 1,000 most polluting rivers, responsible for about 80% of global ocean plastic pollution, before the end of 2025. The invention is being given a test run in four countries, with the Dominican Republic being the first in the Americas region. In addition to the Dominican Republic, the systems have been assigned to work in Jakarta (Indonesia), Klang (Malaysia), and Can Tho in the Mekong Delta (Vietnam).

The Ocean Cleanup initiative has the backing of the Ministry of the Presidency in the Dominican Republic. It also is endorsed by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Dominican Republic and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The Ministry of the Presidency and the UNDP representatives signed the agreement for the Dominican Republic with The Ocean Cleanup in Rotterdam, The Netherlands on Friday, 25 October 2019.

The alliance seeks to promote a public-private platform to reduce consumption, eliminate plastics and waste from rivers in the Dominican Republic and ensure safe processing and disposal conditions, as part of a strategy to protect tributaries and oceans, and ensure health conditions to the population living around these bodies of water.

Sina del Rosario, Vice Minister of Habitat and Local Development, attended the event held in Holland on behalf of the Minister of the Presidency, Gustavo Montalvo. Montalvo, in his capacity as president of the Presidential Commission for the Rescue of the Ozama and Isabela Rivers, stressed the importance of the agreement. “There is no better initiative to eliminate the plastics that, through the Ozama River, reach the coast of our capital city.

As part of the commitments, the Ministry of the Presidency will coordinate actions for waste monitoring and operation of the plastic waste interception system.

For its part, UNDP will facilitate the operation of this platform, promoting dialogue, coordination and the flow of information. It will also involve its network of experts to analyze business alternatives to take advantage of recovered waste and plastics.

The Ocean Cleanup will provide technical assistance, promote the installation of the waste interception system and train those responsible for ensuring its operation. It will contribute to the development of research to monitor the situation of plastics in rivers and determine the most appropriate sites to establish these collection systems.

The initiative has the support of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in conjunction with various other public sector institutions such as the Ministry of Environment and Dominicana Limpia. For the private sector the participants are Tropigas Foundation and ECORED, with the companies it represents, as well as the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (INTEC) representing the academy.

The agreement will have an initial validity of two years.

Read more:
The Ocean Cleanup
El Caribe
ABC News
YouTube

28 October 2019

The Dutch environmental organization Ocean Cleanup announced the deployment to the Dominican Republic of their The Interceptor™ system that is described as a scalable solution to intercept river plastic pollution.
