He replaces former President Leonel Fern\u00e1ndez, who had held the position for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leonel Fern\u00e1ndez resigned as president of the ruling party after he was defeated in the 6 October 2019 by Medina-backed Gonzalo Castillo. Fern\u00e1ndez has denounced widespread fraud. He removed himself from the party and announced the creating of The People\u2019s Force (La Fuerza del Pueblo) to compete in the May 2020 presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Central Committee announced the replacements of seven members of the 34-member Political Committee that have resigned. These are Leonel Fern\u00e1ndez, Cesar Pina Toribio, Bautista Rojas G\u00f3mez, Rafael Alburquerque, Franklin Almeyda and Radham\u00e9s Jim\u00e9nez. The position left by the death of Juan de los Santos and that of Jose Joaqu\u00edn Bid\u00f3 Medina, who resigned for his failing health, were also filled.
