Foreign Minister Miguel Vargas presented the Oscar de la Renta Award to Dominican Migrants to Dr. Carlos Dante Heredia Garc\u00eda, a Dominican ophthalmologist who lives in Spain. Heredia Garc\u00eda received the award during a ceremony held on Monday, 12 November 2019 at the National Theater. He is an honorary member of the Barraquer Ophthalmology Center, the Academy of Medical Sciences of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, and the Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic. He is regarded as a world pioneer in ocular immunology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the event, Vargas highlighted that Heredia Garc\u00eda \u201chas always carried the Dominican Republic in his heart.\u201d He spoke of how the physician throughout the years has actively collaborated with the Institute Against Glaucoma Blindness in the Cristo Rey slum neighborhood in Santo Domingo. The physician has also helped Dominicans to enter the prestigious Barraquer Center to carry out specialization studies and practices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vargas said that the award-winner has performed more than 8,000 retinal and vitreous operations. He is also the author of numerous videos and documentaries on ophthalmology, and has published more than 200 works in renowned scientific journals in different languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The finalists for the award were Ang\u00e9lica Flor\u00e9n, Berniza Calder\u00f3n, Daisy Cocco, Digna Cabral, Kenia del Orbe, Juli\u00e1n Jos\u00e9 Javier, Rolando Acosta, Dante S\u00e1nchez and Rub\u00e9n Peralta. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

First Lady C\u00e1ndida Montilla represented President Danilo Medina at the ceremony. Also present were Ambassador Mar\u00eda de los \u00c1ngeles Garc\u00eda, the foreign minister\u2019s wife, who is the general supervisor of the award. Members of the jury present were its president, Jos\u00e9 Luis (Pep\u00edn) Corripio Estrada, president of the Corripio Group; and Hayd\u00e9e Kuret, senior vice president of Grupo Puntacana, government officials, diplomats, legislators, media directors and special guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A show with Milly Quezada, Adalgisa Pantale\u00f3n, Eddy Herrera, Cristal Marie, Miriam Cruz and Manny Cruz closed the event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Oscar de la Renta Award was created by President Danilo Medina in 2017 to recognize Dominican migrants and their descendants, up to the second generation, whose contributions have positively impacted the community in which they reside and their country of origin, the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, the award honors the outstanding professional and human trajectory of the renowned fashion designer Oscar de la Renta, who was also a benefactor of several generations, through the “Hogar del Ni\u00f1o” (Children’s Home), a childcare center established in La Romana. He also contributed to the construction of a school in Punta Cana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
