Airport Department director Marino Collante was captured on video mandating his employees to openly campaign and vote for the ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) candidates. The video was widely shared on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collante is a Social Christian Reform Party (PRSC) politician. The PRSC in previous campaigns had been a strong ally with the ruling PLD. The video is evidence of the government officer’s violation of the electoral law and a lenient Central Electoral Board (JCE) rule that had accepted that government officers could openly campaign after office hours. In the video, Collante says he has been campaigning since 7am, not after hours as the JCE allowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In November 2019, the Balaguerista PRSC board of directors led by Collante proclaimed its support for the ruling PLD at the different levels of elections. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), Julio C\u00e9sar Casta\u00f1os Guzm\u00e1n, warned on Tuesday, 11 February, that anyone who coerces the vote of Dominicans will be punished as established by the Electoral Law. He said that voters must be free to exercise their right in freedom, democracy and equality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Dominicans are free to vote for whomever they want and any person who presents himself threatening or carrying out an attitude of threat within what that secret vote and being the Dominicans who have to vote in one way or another by regime of consequence, is profoundly mistaken, does not live in democracy for democracy is not that,” said the head of the electoral body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In statements to the press, Casta\u00f1os Guzm\u00e1n also called on political parties not to break the peace and coexistence of Dominicans. “We do not want angry discussions, nor do we want violence or the breaking of peace. This is a civic day where the protagonist is neither the Central Electoral Board nor the parties, but the citizens who are going to vote,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
