The visit is part of the annual officer six-month training tour that will end when the ship returns on 3 November to Cadiz, Spain. The ship is under the command of Captain Santiago de Colsa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ship is docked at the Port of Sans Souc\u00ed, in eastern Santo Domingo. The ship was received on Sunday, 1 March 2020 by Navy officers and the Spanish Ambassador Alejandro Abell\u00e1n. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Juan Sebasti\u00e1n Elcano is a four-mast topsail schooner with a hull made of iron. It has a crew of 220 members. This ship is on its &#8220;500th Anniversary of the First Circumnavigation of the Earth,&#8221; an expedition initiated by Ferdinand Magellan. The ship is named in honor of the Spanish explorer Juan Sebasti\u00e1n Elcano who completed the circumnavigation of the world after Magellan\u2019s death. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the five days that the Juan Sebastian de Elcano is anchored in the port of San Souci it will be open to the public on 2 and 5 March, from 4 pm to 7 pm. On the 4th and 5th of March there will also be additional visiting hours from 10 am to 1 pm. The departure of the ship is scheduled for Friday, 6 March at about 4:30 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tour this year is taking the Royal Navy ship to visit the ports in Las Palmas, Spain; Rio de Janeiro and Recife in Brazil; Buenos Aires and Mar de Plata, Argentina; Montevideo in Uruguay; Cura\u00e7ao; Santo Domingo and Miami, USA  before returning to Cadiz on 18 April 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diariolibre.com\/actualidad\/ciudad\/el-buque-escuela-juan-sebastian-elcano-regresa-a-santo-domingo-DM17399390?utm_source=recomendadas&amp;utm_medium=bloque&amp;utm_campaign=blueconic\">Diario Libre<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2 March 2020<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Spanish Navy midshipmen training tall ship, Juan Sebastian Elcano, is docked in Santo Domingo open for visits by the general public from Monday, 2 March to Thursday, 5 March 2020.
