Contreras, who ran on the ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) ticket, said he hoped Carolina Mejia, the candidate for the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), could turn the Dominican capital into a 21st-century metropolis, &#8220;as the people deserve.\u201d He wished her every success in her administration that begins 24 April 2020. He said she is welcome to use any of his proposals. &#8220;The ideas are there to be used,&#8221; Contreras said, in his congratulations to the mayor-elect of the National District. He defended recycling as a need for the capital city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>50-year old Carolina Mej\u00eda becomes the first Dominican woman to be elected mayor of the National District, the capital city of the Dominican Republic. She is the daughter of former President Hip\u00f3lito Mej\u00eda (2000-2004) and during his government she was a substitute at the Monetary Board of the Central Bank. She had run for Vice President when Luis Abinader first opted for the Presidency for the PRM in 2016. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was also the last candidate to enter the race. It was expected that present incumbent David Collado would opt for reelection. When he didn\u2019t, Mej\u00eda would announce her bid for the city seat on 6 December 2019. The election was scheduled for 16 February. The election was aborted and rescheduled for 15 March due to an e-voting glitch.
