A poll carried out by the Chilean firm, Mart\u00ednez y Salcedo Consultores, at the request of the Partido Revolucionario Dominicano, shows PRD candidate Jos\u00e9 Francisco Pe\u00f1a G\u00f3mez in the lead by 47.6% against the 29.4 percent of Leonel Fern\u00e1ndez and 18.4 percent of Jacinto Peynado. The same survey shows that Pe\u00f1a G\u00f3mez would win the election in a second round, if it was necessary, with 52.3 percent of the votes against 44.7 percent of Leonel Fern\u00e1ndez. Some 2,503 people were interviewed for the survey. It showed that Dr Pe\u00f1a G\u00f3mez has gained five percentage points since November 1995, and that his closest contender, Leonel Fern\u00e1ndez, suffered a loss in the same amount.
