The most important Catholic shrine in the DR, honoring Our Lady of All Graces (La Altagracia), is part of this diocese. Archbishop Nicanor Pe\u00f1a had resigned due to age, in accordance to Canon Law. Monsignor Castro Marte has a long academic and religious history as an educator and in public service.
