According to Coronavirus Bulletin #96 of the Ministry of Public Health’s Department of Epidemiology, the Dominican Republic has 27,936 confirmed cases, 566 new confirmed cases from 130,745 PCR diagnostic tests. The number of PCR cases for the bulletin is 1,970, down from 2,907 the previous day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tally of deaths is now 675, including 6 new registered deaths. The previous 14-day average is 9.4. Both Public Health Minister Rafael S\u00e1nchez C\u00e1rdenas and the director of the National Health Service, Chanel Rosa Chupany have stated that the death tally does not necessarily reflect the deaths for the period covered by the bulletin and deaths that are now being registered could have occurred in the past. During the 23 June press conference, Dr. S\u00e1nchez C\u00e1rdenas said that of the 675 deaths, there are around 200 that are probable Covid-19 deaths, not confirmed deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of Bulletin #96, 2,824 patients are hospitalized, up from 2,726 patients in the previous bulletin. Of these, 173 patients are in intensive care units. The fatality rate, the number of reported deaths per number of confirmed cases, is 2.42%, down from 2.44% in the previous bulletin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a known fact that the more tests that are carried out, the more confirmed cases there will be. Despite billions spent by the Medina administration during the National State of Emergency, the country has never been able to boost its PCR testing capacity to adequate levels for a nation with 10 million people. Of the tests, an estimated 80% are carried out by private labs that have been more successful in sourcing the testing kits than the public health authorities. The average testing over the past 14 days is now at 2,331 PCR tests. The statistical reports do not include rapid response blood antibody tests or patients diagnosed with tomography or other means. The Dominican Republic has a population of more than 10 million people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of Monday, 22 June 2020 at 4pm, the most confirmed cases continue to be reported in urban areas where most of the tests are carried out. Greater Santo Domingo (Santo Domingo province and the National District) has 54.6% of the 27,370 total confirmed cases. Santiago, San Cristobal, La Vega, Duarte (San Francisco de Macor\u00eds), Espaillat, La Romana, La Altagracia (Higuey, Ver\u00f3n, Punta Cana), Puerto Plata, Azua, Monse\u00f1or Nouel (Bonao), Barahona, S\u00e1nchez Ram\u00edrez (Cotu\u00ed), Hermanas Mirabal (Salcedo), San Juan de la Maguana and San Pedro de Macoris are provinces that have 200 or more cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most new cases or recently allocated cases are reported for the 22 June deadline are: Santo Domingo province (204), National District (136), Santiago (52), San Crist\u00f3bal (32), La Altagracia (12), La Romana (10), Monse\u00f1or Nouel (10), La Vega (7), San Juan de la Maguana (7), Hermanas Mirabal (6), Azua (6), Puerto Plata (5), San Pedro de Macoris (4), Peravia (4), Mar\u00eda Trinidad S\u00e1nchez (3), S\u00e1nchez Ram\u00edrez (2), Valverde (2), Espaillat (2) and Saman\u00e1 (2). The Ministry of Public Health reports one or no confirmed cases in 13 of 31 provinces and the National District. The number of recorded cases is dependent on the availability of PCR tests that continue to be scarce, especially in the provinces where waiting lists are long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
