President Danilo Medina was in Azua on 5 August 2020 for the inauguration of the 72-kilometer long reconstructed and expanded Azua-Barahona highway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Public Works Minister Ramon Pepin, in his keynote speech, said that the improvements enhance safety and provide significant savings in travel time and vehicle operating costs for users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This road was designed for a travel speed of 80 km \/ h, and has two lanes of 3.65 meters wide, two-meter sidewalks, four-inch asphalt folder, drainage system, slope stabilization and acceleration lane,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also explained that the road has informative, preventive, and regulatory indications for its users’ safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Azua-Barahona highway’s design and construction complies with the national rules and regulations established by the Ministry of Public Works and the standards of the American Association of Interstate Highways and Transportation Officials, known as (AASHTO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A note from the MOPC’s press office highlights that the Azua-Barahona highway connects the southern region with the southwest and the southern border area, passing through communities and farm produce areas that supply the markets of the capital and other important cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pep\u00edn highlighted that dozens of important roads had been built in the southern region. He mentioned:

Pueblo Viejo-Las Terreras and El Cigual highways
Padre Las Casas-Monte Bonito
Padre Las Casas-Guayabal

Barahona Bypass,
San Juan Bypass
Las 4 Bocas- Arroyo Dulce
