Ignoring several judicial decisions regarding the irregularity and illegality of its construction, President Danilo Medina on Friday, 7 August 2020 inaugurated the controversial bus terminal in East Santo Domingo (SDE).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What makes this gesture more newsworthy is that the nation’s very highest courts, the Superior Administrative Court and the Constitutional Court, had ruled against the construction of a bus terminal so close to a protected area in Santo Domingo East. The courts ordered the initiative to follow the rules that included the presentation of a full impact study and community approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Santo Domingo East City Council had protested the construction from the start, but higher-ups in government gave the green light to the Ministry of Public Works to finish the terminal. The terminal was built in the parking lot for the Mirador del Este Park and is adjacent to the Los Tres Ojos protected area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Santo Domingo East Mayor Manuel Jim\u00e9nez said he was not invited to the inauguration. Nor was Santo Domingo province senator-elect Antonio Taveras Guzm\u00e1n. Both were elected this year and had campaigned against the bus terminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Santo Domingo East Mayor Manuel Jimenez has suggested turning the facility into a Center for Innovations for the Caribbean and a School of Fine Arts for eastern Santo Domingo. He said it definitely would not operate as a bus terminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
