US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo tweeted about his scheduled Sunday visit to the Dominican Republic. Pompeo will be coming with Michael Kozak, Acting Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs. Reports are he will be accompanied by a 30+ delegation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given the Covid-19 epidemic, the inaugural celebrations of President-elect Luis Abinader start of government are limited to a luncheon for important visitors at the Presidential Palace on Sunday after the ceremony at the National Assembly. The swearing-in ceremony begins at 10am at the National Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a tweet, U.S. Secretary Pompeo said: \u201cLooking forward to visiting the Dominican Republic on August 16th and congratulating newly elected President @luisabinader. The U.S. values our Caribbean neighbors and looks forward to strengthening U.S.-Dominican cooperation to support a safer and more prosperous region.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Named Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez tweeted that President-elect Luis Abinader has expressed to Secretary Pompeo the country\u2019s interest in strengthening ties with the United States considering the relationship special because of the multiple ties uniting the countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diario Libre speculated what is behind the visit of Pompeo. This is the third time since the Trujillo dictatorship in 1961 that a US Secretary of State attends a Dominican inaugural. In addition to strengthening the U.S. role as the leading player and as a prime trading partner, political scientist Ricardo P\u00e9rez, told Diario Libre that the United States would be seeking to synchronize its anti-corruption policy with the new government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pompeo and Kozak are scheduled to arrive and leave on the same day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
