But as is with cyclones, the storm changed and instead skirted the south, causing flooding in densely populated Greater Santo Domingo and the southwestern provinces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Luis Abinader flew over the southwest on the morning of Monday, 24 August to see the damages caused by Tropical Storm Laura on Sunday. The trip took him to Peravia, Ocoa, Azua, Barahona and to Pedernales, the province with the least population that suffered major flooding of river on the border with Haiti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking to the people of Pedernales, he told the inhabitants: &#8220;I assure you that Pedernales is going to change in this administration.&#8221; In his inaugural speech, Abinader announced his government would move ahead with the tourism development in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On his helicopter tour of the southwest, President Abinader checked out the Monte Grande dam&#8217;s construction. He made a stop in Tamayo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brigades of the Ministry of Public Works are working on restoring the road between Jiman\u00ed and Duverg\u00e9 in Independencia province, also in the southwest.
