He had been admitted to the Hospiten Hospital on 25 December 2020 and while he tested negative for Covid-19, the virus damaged his lungs and he never fully recovered. He was governor of the Central Bank from 2000 to 2003, under the Presidency of Hip\u00f3lito Mej\u00eda.
