The jury presided by artist Leopoldo Maler announced the Visual Arts Biennial winners on 19 August 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maler said that Prandy\u2019s work contributes to the enrichment of the artistic heritage of the Dominican Republic. &#8220;The jury has decided to award this work for the forcefulness of its social discourse and its careful realization. This installation has been conceived with a subtle and insightful approach that denounces the ruthless slavery as the root of sugar production in the Caribbean,&#8221; he stated in making the announcement. Other members of the jury were Tom\u00e1s Rancier and Paula G\u00f3mez. The Grand Prize comes with a RD$1 million cash award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The awards ceremony took place in the esplanade of the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in Santo Domingo&#8217;s Plaza de la Cultura. Presiding the event were Minister of Culture Carmen Heredia and deputy minister for Cultural Heritage Gamal Michel\u00e9n. Also the director of the National Gallery of Fine Arts, Marianne de Tolentino; Federico Fondeur, director of the Museum of Modern Art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other winning artists:<br>Carlos Despradel for &#8220;Cr\u00f3nica de una historia mal contada&#8221;; Juan Carlos Guzm\u00e1n, &#8220;Valle&#8221;; Guadalupe Casasnovas for &#8220;Escuadra&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leonardo Dur\u00e1n for &#8220;Y\u00f3, Ad\u00e1n,&#8221; Dustin Mu\u00f1oz, &#8220;Retrato Aleg\u00f3rico de la injusticia&#8221; (Allegorical Portrait of Injustice); and Mari Carmen Orizondo, (Mar\u00eda del Carmen Orizondo).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also &#8220;Un mar sin riberas&#8221; (Polyptych 19), Juan Grisanty, &#8220;Verano caliente&#8221;, Elvin D\u00edaz for &#8220;Entre t\u00faneles y abismos&#8221; and &#8220;Nathalie Landestoy for &#8220;Papel al desnudo&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The honorable mentions went to Cromcin Dom\u00ednguez for &#8220;Palo E&#8217; lu&#8221;; Ricardo Arsenio Toribio&#8217;s &#8220;Memoria de la semana Mayor&#8221;; Ottmar Suero Javier for &#8220;La marcha de los perros \u00e1ngeles&#8221;; Genaro Reyes (Cayuco) for &#8220;N\u00e1ufrago de nacimiento&#8221; and Johnny Bonnelly for &#8220;El buzo que aprendi\u00f3 a volar&#8221; (Tony Capell\u00e1n Inmemoriam).&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of the nine winners will receive a RD$300,000 cash award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read more in Spanish:<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diariolibre.com\/revista\/cultura\/la-artista-aniova-prandy-gana-el-gran-premio-de-la-bienal-nacional-de-artes-visuales-PO28268160\">Diario Libre <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>20 August 2021<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Visual artist Aniova Prandy\u2019s \u201cThe Sugar Maafa\u201d has won the grand prize of the 29th National Visual Arts Biennial, organized by the Ministry of Culture.
