{"id":170637,"date":"2021-12-16T07:33:54","date_gmt":"2021-12-16T11:33:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dr1.com\/wordpress\/?p=170637"},"modified":"2021-12-16T09:26:27","modified_gmt":"2021-12-16T13:26:27","slug":"higuey-court-sentences-three-to-10-years-for-people-smuggling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dr1.com\/news\/2021\/12\/16\/higuey-court-sentences-three-to-10-years-for-people-smuggling\/","title":{"rendered":"Higuey court sentences three to 10 years for people smuggling"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/dr1.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Justicia-maso-Twitter.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-145724\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Specialized Prosecutor&#8217;s Office against the Smuggling of Migrants and Trafficking in Persons (PETT), in coordination with the Prosecutor&#8217;s Office of the district of Higuey obtained a 10-year prison sentence for three men who last year attempted to transport 45 Dominicans and Haitians to Puerto Rico illegally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The defendants were arrested in May 2020 for their involvement in the illegal trafficking of 42 Dominicans and three Haitians, who paid between RD$50,000 and US$5,000.00 each for the trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Collegiate Court of La Altagracia sentenced Carlos Rodr\u00edguez Mercedes, Nelson Rojas and Pascual G\u00fc\u00edlamo, to also pay a fine of 150 minimum wages each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Public Prosecutor&#8217;s Office, represented by prosecutor V\u00edctor Ram\u00f3n Camacho, presented sufficient evidence which was admitted by judges Sagrario del R\u00edo Castillo, Domingo Alcides Duverg\u00e9 Caraballo and Carmen Virginia Almonte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The boat trip was intercepted about 23 nautical miles northeast of Cabo Enga\u00f1o, in the province of La Altagracia by members of the Dominican Armada and US Coast Guard officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the sentence, Carlos Rodriguez Mercedes and Nelson Rojas directed or captained the boat, while Pascual G\u00fc\u00edlamo collected the money from the travelers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Public Prosecutor&#8217;s Office proved that the three men violated articles 1, letter F, and 2 of Law 137-03, on the Illicit Smuggling of Migrants and Trafficking in Persons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since June of last year, the accused had been serving preventive detention in the Anamuya Correction and Rehabilitation Center, in the municipality of Hig\u00fcey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read more in Spanish:<br><a href=\"https:\/\/noticiassin.com\/pais\/10-anos-de-prision-a-tres-hombres-trasladaban-a-45-personas-en-yola-hacia-puerto-rico-1203754\">Noticias SIN <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>16 December 2021<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Specialized Prosecutor&#8217;s Office against the Smuggling of Migrants and Trafficking in Persons (PETT), in coordination with the Prosecutor&#8217;s Office of the district of Higuey obtained a 10-year prison sentence for three men who last year attempted to transport 45 Dominicans and Haitians to Puerto Rico illegally.
