The award recognizes the career of journalists in the country and their contributions to society. The award comes with a cash prize of RD$1 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gautreaux Pi\u00f1eyro was chosen unanimously by the jury made up by Education Minister Roberto Fulcar; Aurelio Henriquez, president of the Dominican Guild of Journalists; Persio Maldonado, president of the Dominican Society of Newspapers; Rosa Olga Medrano, executive director of the Dominican Association of Radio Broadcasters; F\u00e9lix Almonte, director of the Department of Social Communication of the Universidad Aut\u00f3noma de Santo Domingo, and journalists Jos\u00e9 P. Monegro, director of the newspaper El D\u00eda; Miguelina Crespo and Eddy Pereyra, secretary of the award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bonaparte Gautreaux Pi\u00f1eyro was born in La Romana in 1937. He studied law and journalism at the Universidad Aut\u00f3noma de Santo Domingo. He served as consul in La Guaira, Venezuela and vice minister of the Presidency under the government head by Colonel Francisco Alberto Caama\u00f1o De\u00f1\u00f3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has published essays on the origin of merengue and Dominican narrative. He is the author of &#8220;Cuentos del Abuelo Julio&#8221;, &#8220;La ciudad clandestina y los secretos del General&#8221; and a novel, &#8220;Al final del arco iris&#8221;.
