President Luis Abinader explained that the Dominican Republic did not sign the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection during the 9th Summit of the Americas because the government was given less than 10 days to study the document. Abinader said there was no time for the National Migration Council to study the draft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An editorial in El Caribe backs the decision of President Abinader on the grounds that we are a neighbor with Haiti, where in recent years the political, social, economic and security situation has worsened considerably and that nation poses high-risk situations for the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El Caribe says that the excuse for not signing was Solomonic. But that the reality is that it would grant refugee status to Haitians to cross to this side with the major implications for the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The document was signed by the heads of state and government of Argentina, Barbados, Belize, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the United States, and Uruguay. The countries reiterated the will to strengthen national, regional, and hemispheric efforts to create the conditions for safe, orderly, humane, and regular migration and to strengthen frameworks for international protection and cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
