Jorge Mera was murdered on Monday, 13 June 2022. State prosecutors say the motive was a displeased person who sought to use his political and personal ties to get environmental permits passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marvin del Cid has been covering environmental issues for Diario Libre. He writes that a day before the death of Jorge Mera, and on the occasion of Environmental Day, several leading environmental groups had published a press release listing what was on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Likewise, Argenida Romero, also reporting for Diario Libre writes in the 15 June issue that the Dominican Republic does not have a legal framework that defines and regulates environmental liabilities generated by mining, nor is there an inventory of the existing environmental liabilities.
