The European Union delegation in the Dominican Republic honored Attorney General Miriam Germ\u00e1n Brito with the European Human Rights Award on Friday, 1 July 2022. Ambassador Katja Afheldt of the European Union presented the award to the former Supreme Court of Justice penal judge Miriam Germ\u00e1n, today the country’s top prosecutor in a ceremony appropriately held at the Fray Anton de Montesinos Monument to Human Rights on the Malecon in Santo Domingo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her remarks when accepting the award, Germ\u00e1n Brito stressed that a society with optimal controls so that public and private corruption receive the expected consequences is one where human rights can take root and people can aspire to progressive and sustainable human development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Germ\u00e1n Brito said the winning of the award is the result of the collective effort of prosecutors who investigate and prosecute corruption that is affecting public patrimony, with a commitment to the rule of law and strict adherence to due process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I have always believed that the emphasis in the work we perform in the justice system must be on the human being to guarantee the conditions for peaceful coexistence, legal security and social progress. I am confident that the Public Prosecutor’s Office can continue to be a reference for institutional transformation that society demands,” said Germ\u00e1n Brito.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Germ\u00e1n Brito attributed her meeting the challenges to being born with a reasoned insubmissive attitude. She said this stubbornness has enabled her to walk through paths of abuse and mistreatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I thank the European Union for this recognition that I receive in my person, but which corresponds to the work that the Public Prosecutor’s Office, as the body in charge of the prosecution of crime and the exercise of public action on behalf of Dominican society,” said Germ\u00e1n Brito.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ambassador Katja Afheldt expressed that the European Human Rights Award is a symbol that represents the commitment of the European Union in the fight against corruption, and in favor of transparency and justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“By awarding this prize to Magistrate Miriam Germ\u00e1n Brito, both the European Union and its member states want to highlight our recognition, support and deepest respect for the commendable work of the magistrate,” Afheldt said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU delegation stresses that the award seeks to send an unequivocal message on the importance of fighting impunity and in favor of equality for all citizens before the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
