Last week, the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur) announced works to improve the Santo Domingo East boardwalk attraction for residents in eastern Santo Domingo and visitors. The Columbus Lighthouse and the National Aquarium are two of the key attractions in the area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The eastern side of Greater Santo Domingo Malec\u00f3n is part of the long boardwalk that continues on to the Las Americas International Airport from the National District in the West. The Ozama River divides the National District from Santo Domingo East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tourism Minister Collado sees the new works as an extension of the Malec\u00f3n project, a major commitment he first spearheaded when he was Mayor of Santo Domingo (2016-2020). He highlighted the Malec\u00f3n improvements are a continuation of the National District’s Malecon project from the Montesino Monument and the Colonial City, across the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently, the National District mayor\u2019s office announced similar improvements to the west side of the Malec\u00f3n, with works on 3.5 km, from N\u00fa\u00f1ez de C\u00e1ceres avenue to the Ciudad Ganadera, contracted to Consorcio Paseo Mar\u00edtimo del Malec\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new Santo Domingo East project is ambitious and calls for an investment of RD$600 million in the intervention of five kilometers by the Caribbean Sea. The Monumental Heritage Department and the Integral Program for Tourist and Urban Development of the Colonial City prepared the project. Collado said the expansion and park works will be delivered in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shaney Pe\u00f1a, who heads Mitur’s Planning and Tourism Projects Department, presented the project last week to President Luis Abinader on site. She said the plan makes the most of the sea-facing stretch. The sidewalk will be widened, a bicycle path will be added and the existing parking lots will be improved. Facilities for commerce will be set up at seven points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Am\u00edn Abel Santos, general coordinator of the Integral Program for Tourism and Urban Development of the Colonial City, added that the SDE boardwalk will have a skateboard track of the highest level, built to Olympic competition standards. The Santo Domingo East boardwalk is walking distance from the Mirador del Este Park and the sports venues in the area where the 2003 Pan Am Games were held.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
