The Ministry of Economy and Planning had called for dividing the country into five regions. After years of stagnation in Congress, both houses of the National Congress finally gave the needed yesses to the bill that creates the planning regions of the country. The bill is essential for unifying the country’s division into regions for effective implementation of public policies. It now moves to the Presidency for enactment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bill organizes the country into 10 regions, formed by provinces and municipalities. It establishes the norms for the single planning zones in the national territory to favor the nation’s sustainable growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also contemplates policies, plans, programs and public investment projects at national, regional and local levels, to ensure greater cohesion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The regions covered by the new legislature:
Cibao Norte, which includes the provinces of Santiago, Puerto Plata and Espaillat; Cibao Sur Region, made up of the provinces of La Vega, Monse\u00f1or Nouel and S\u00e1nchez Ram\u00edrez;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cibao Nordeste Region, made up of the provinces of Duarte, Hermanas Mirabal, Mar\u00eda Trinidad S\u00e1nchez and Saman\u00e1;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Northwest Cibao Region, which includes the provinces of Dajab\u00f3n, Santiago Rodr\u00edguez, Montecristi and Valverde;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Valdesia Region, made up of San Crist\u00f3bal, Peravia and San Jos\u00e9 de Ocoa;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enriquillo Region, which includes the provinces of Barahona, Bahoruco, Pedernales and Independencia;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Valley Region, comprised of the provinces of Azua, San Juan and El\u00edas Pi\u00f1a;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yuma Region, which includes the provinces of La Romana, La Altagracia and El Seibo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hig\u00fcamo Region, which includes the provinces of San Pedro de Macor\u00eds, Hato Mayor and Monte Plata;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ozama Region, comprised of the National District and the province of Santo Domingo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bill had passed in the Senate, but then was modified in the Chamber of Deputies. It moved back to the Senate and was approved on deadline, at the close of the first term of the legislature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It then moved to the Presidency for enactment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ministry of Statistics, Ministry of Education, Police, Ministry of Agriculture, Armed Forces, each have a regional distribution that is different. The Ministry of Education, for example, has 18 regions nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
