Shortly after his induction in the Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame, legendary David Ortiz (Big Papi) announced he is investing in cannabis. He announced a new line of cannabis products branded as Papi Cannabis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ortiz said he has partnered with Revolutionary Farms to create the new brand. The line includes products like Sweet Sluggers, and packages of pre-rolled blunts. He said this summer, other products will be launched, such as a vape cartridge, a chocolate edible made with fair trade Dominican chocolate, and a healing salve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the launching of the new line, the retired Boston Red Sox slugger said while he didn’t use cannabis before he played, he thinks it’s a great tool to deal with stress and physical pain. “Reality is that cannabis doesn’t help in baseball, I don’t think. You know what I’m saying, if you’re talking about sports, you always gotta be speeding up, and cannabis slows you down,” he remarked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Dominican Republic, the announcement was not celebrated. A back page editorial in Diario Libre criticized the announcement, especially the timing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sports writer Dionisio Soldevila wrote in Diario Libre on 29 July 2022 that while marijuana selling is legal in the United States, it still is a drug that is banned in the Dominican Republic, the country where David Ortiz spends the most of his time. “No matter how harmless its defenders want to say it is, which is false, an exemplary figure in sports should not promote it, much less commercialize it,” remarked Soldevilla in his “L\u00ednea de Hit” sports column.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
