The donation is part of the project, &#8220;Cooperation in Criminal Investigation in Central America to Combat Crime and Drug Trafficking at the International Level- AC1\/ICRIME.\u201d The project seeks to strengthen investigation units, forensic institutes, networks and criminal investigation procedures in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attorney General of the Dominican Republic Miriam Germ\u00e1n Brito received the donation fromKatja Afheldt,  the European Union (EU) Ambassador to the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The equipment will be used at the forensic toxicology departments of the laboratories in Santo Domingo and Santiago de los Caballeros. The equipments are assessed at RD$2.45 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The equipment will be used to improve procedures and the development of new techniques in the criminal investigation units and forensic institutes. It will increase the capabilities of forensic investigation experts, optimize criminal investigation processes and obtain toxicological results more quickly and reliably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambassador Katja Afheldt stated: &#8220;In the Dominican Republic, we support investigative capacities with the Icrime program. With other regional cooperation programs such as SEACOP, COPOLAD and Multi Border Security we are committed to the fight against maritime crime, drug trafficking and human trafficking. Finally, we are also assisting in a more general way the reform of the judicial system in the country with a new twinning project of approximately RD$56 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attorney General German Brito emphasized that the collaboration will impact investigative processes for the clarification and prosecution of criminal acts, in whose cases it would not be possible to establish responsibilities without the appropriate technical capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The donated material was received by Francisco Manuel Gerdo, the director general of the National Forensic Services Institute (Inacif). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The criminal investigation cooperation project, financed mainly by the European Union, is part of the Central American Security Strategy (ESCA), coordinated by the General Secretariat of the Central American Integration System (SG-SICA), the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policy (FIIAPP) and is supported by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AC1\/ICRIME is aimed at improving the security of the citizens of Central America and the Dominican Republic, in order to contribute to the sustainable development of the region by increasing the effectiveness of criminal justice systems in the prosecution of international crime and drug trafficking, thereby reducing impunity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The European Union (EU) has delivered innovative equipment to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF) of the Dominican Republic to help combat crime.
