The city of Hato Mayor is in shock after the Tuesday, 30 May 2023 school bus tragedy. The children and the driver suffered major injuries when the school bus they were in was impacted by a Pollo Cibao feed freighter truck on the Hato Mayor-Sabana de la Mar road at 6:30am. The bus was almost full and was parked on the road waiting for the school children to board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bus drivers says he lost control. Witnesses say the truck driver was speeding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The students studied at the Centro Educativo Wenceslao Peguero in Hato Mayor and took the bus every day to school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least two teenager girls have died while another dozen children are hospitalized in the Leopoldo Mart\u00edn in Hato Mayor, and at the Antonio Musa public hospital in San Pedro de Macoris. Four of the 12 most seriously injured sent to the Ramon de Lara Military Hospital in San Isidro, Santo Domingo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The driver of the bus, 47-year old Jos\u00e9 Benedicto Rosario is one of the seriously injured and is at the Ramon de Lara hospital. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The truck driver, identified as 24-year old Ismael Daniel Matos Hern\u00e1ndez, fled the scene, but later turned himself into the authorities. Matos said he lost control of the truck and said he fled, fearing for his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first two deceased were identified as 17-year old Alexandra Clevel and 15-year old Estefani Castillo that received the full brunt of the impact with the truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
