Service resumed on Sunday at the Santo Domingo Metro after nine persons were injured in the frontal collision between two trains on Saturday, 16 September 2023 at around 11am along a line connecting to Santo Domingo North. There were no fatalities, but one person was hospitalized so the medics could continue to monitor the patient for 24 hours to ensure all was well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opret has yet to explain what happened regarding the collision of the two trains between the Gregorio Urbano Gilbert and Mam\u00e1 Tingo near Villa Mella in northern Santo Domingo. Officials detained the two conductors for investigations, but these were later released. The authorities have yet to give an explanation on whether it was a system error or a human error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A video of another day made by a Metro rider was uploaded showing a female train conductor paying more attention to her cell phone than her job. The use of cell phones while driving the train violates the Operators Manual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ney Arias Trauma Hospital took care of the nine injured, and newspapers featured interviews of the passengers reporting on being flung about by the accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By Sunday, 17 September 2023, the trains were back running from the Mama Tingo station to the Maximo Gomez station and the rest of Line 1. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the first accident of the Santo Domingo Metro that has been in operation since 2009. The relatively small impact in the frontal collision seem to mean the security systems embedded in the train worked. Yet, the ongoing investigation is yet to reveal what happened and what will be done to prevent a future occurrence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photos of the frontal collision of the trains, nevertheless, shows that the security systems must have kicked in to avoid a major accident. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
