The rector of the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (INTEC), Julio S\u00e1nchez Mar\u00ed\u00f1ez announced innovative programs that are part of the university’s 51st anniversary “Strategic Plan 2023-2027.” In a meeting with the press, S\u00e1nchez Mar\u00ed\u00f1ez highlighted the university’s commitment to innovation, research, the training of socially responsible, competent and entrepreneurial citizens, and with the generation of knowledge for transformation and sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the meeting, Ulises Jauregui-Haza, coordinator of the Sargassum Interdisciplinary Research Group, spoke about the university’s initiatives to deal with macroalgae. He shared details of the development of organic liquid biofertilizer by a university team of researchers from the Area of Basic and Environmental Sciences and the Association of Organic Banana Farmers of the Northwest Line (BANELINO). The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) financed the effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jauregui-Haza said that the program is part of the actions of INTEC to develop a sargassum industry under the principles of “blue economy and circular economy, creating new jobs and social opportunities and contributing to sustainable development.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, Luis Toirac and Jessica Feliz presented the Learning Factory program developed by INTEC in together with Penn State University. The program has the support of the Dominican business sector. Engineering students are encouraged to put their creativity and ingenuity at the service of business, helping companies find innovative solutions to the challenges they face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Rosario Ar\u00f3stegui, director of Development, Institutional Relations and Graduates, explained that the university is committed to STEM training in all training programs, making it a transversal axis in the new strategy. “The program seeks to promote STEM education, bringing innovative experiences at INTEC to the high school classrooms. A participant-centered, inquiry-based approach is used as a vehicle for students to learn principles of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, employing and enhancing 21st Century skills,” Ar\u00f3stegui said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
