President Luis Abinader, as president of the National Council of the Magistry, summoned the members to a working session on Tuesday, 10 October 2023 at 5pm at the Presidential Palace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The members are asked to look into amending Regulation 1-17 to apply Law 138-11 Organic Law of the National Council of the Magistracy and select five new members of the Constitutional Court. On 27 December 2023, the term of five judges of the Constitutional Court expires, including that of the Constitutional Court\u2019s first president, Milton Ray Guevara. The high court started in 2012. Previously, the Supreme Court of Justice was the court of last resort. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Council of the Magistracy has been convened on two previous occasions during the Abinader presidency. This was in December 2020 when four new Constitutional Court judges were chosen, the enrollment of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) was completed, and the performance of judges of the Supreme Court of Justice was assessed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, again, the CNM met in May 2021 to appoint the new regular and alternate judges of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) upon the expiration of the term of the previous enrollment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to President Abinader, other members of the National Council of the Magistracy are the president of the Senate, Ricardo de los Santos Polanco; the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Pacheco; opposition senator, Bautista Rojas; opposition deputy V\u00edctor Fadul; the president of the Supreme Court of Justice, Luis Henry Molina; the magistrate of the Supreme Court of Justice, Nancy Salcedo Fern\u00e1ndez, who also serves as secretary of the council; and the Attorney General of the Republic, Miriam Germ\u00e1n Brito. Except for Senate president De los Santos Polanco, who joins the CNM for the first time, the rest of the members remain the same as in recent calls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
