Trade on the border through the official border gates continues at a standstill. The four gates to cross the border with Haiti through Dajab\u00f3n, Jiman\u00ed, Pedernales and Elias Pi\u00f1a remained closed yesterday by order of the Haitian authorities despite on the Dominican side they were opened to restore trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoy reports the Pedernales market day did not happen. The newspaper explains the vendors fear vandalism because persons in Haiti in control have said “no” to trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoy reporters said they were able to see that the Haitian authorities seized the products that some foreigners managed to buy in Pedernales province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, it was observed that hundreds of Haitians returned to their country voluntarily through the Anse-\u00e0-Pitre door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Individuals though, were able to enter the Dominican Republic going through the biometric registration system, while the military has secured the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The director of the National Budget Jose Rijo Presbot estimated the losses the Dominican Republic government is experiencing due to the border shutdown at RD$150 million- RD$250 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What there is is a commercial problem with a lot of informality that is difficult to quantify\u2026 an inventory was made with the Comptroller General of the Republic and it did not reach 100 million pesos,” said Rijo Presbot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, he said the government has picked up RD$250 million for poultry producers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
