The Organization of American States mission delegates Jean Michel Arrighi, Secretary of Legal Affairs of the OAS and Andr\u00e9s S\u00e1nchez, from the Secretariat of Comprehensive Development of the OAS, concluded their visit to the Dominican Republic to see for themselves the canal under construction to divert waters of a shared river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mission has yet to draft a report to present to OAS secretary general Luis Almagro on their conclusions and recommendations for action following the assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 16 and 17 October 2023, the OAS officials received explanations from Dominican government officials and environmentalists and toured the border area where the Dajabon\/Masacre River canal is under construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In another update on the impasse over the canal, the media has reported on how Haitians have been destroying goods purchased by Haitians in the DR for sale in Haiti. The position of people in control in Haiti is not to allow the import of food products from the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Haitian government demands a reinstating of the previous free entry of people and visa flexibility as in the past to reopen the Haitian side. The Dominican government reopened the official gates for trade, minus some cement and other construction materials, but instated new migratory restrictions, including biometric controls.
