Headed by Vice President Raquel Pe\u00f1a, the government has launched an extensive program to halt the spread of dengue fever (also known as \u201cbonebreak\u201d fever) in the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mild cases of this tropical disease can see a slight fever and flu-like symptoms, but the serious cases, often called dengue hemorrhagic fever, can cause a sharp drop in blood pressure (shock) and death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government has therefore launched a serious effort to reduce the presence of the most important vectors, the aedes aegypti and the aedes albopticus mosquitos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over 25,000 persons will be participating in the nationwide effort. Operations will range from mass-area spraying with truck-mounted and backpack sprayers on the one hand, and house-to-house efforts to remove standing water and water-catching refuse on the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Center for Emergency Operations (COE) will direct most of the efforts since it has the most experience in operations involving tens of thousands of operators. Santo Domingo, the National District, San Cristobal, Puerto Plata, Santiago, La Romana, San Pedro de Macoris, Barahona, and Montecristi will be focal points of these efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
