President Luis Abinader and Santo Domingo Mayor Carolina Mejia attended the opening of the Cristo Park, the new green space built on top what was a polluted gully on the north end of Tiradentes Avenue near Isabela River. The park is a plus for more than 300,000 who live in the Cristo Rey, Ensanche La Fe, and nearby La Agustina, Barrio Obrero, La Puya and Arroyo Hondo neighborhoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wastewater course was cleaned and channeled through a concrete tunnel that runs underneath the 1.5-km-long park. Felipe Suberv\u00ed of the Santo Domingo Aqueduct and Sewer Corporation (CAASD) said the public water agency invested RD$590 million to build the capital city public space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cristo Park is a space combined with environmental and recreational elements. It has children’s play areas, five pavilions for activities, an amphitheater for 300 people, a nursery, a cycle path and two basketball courts: one for professional games and another for games and practice of youths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has two volleyball courts, a soccer field, skateboarding tracks, an outdoor gym, a gazebo, a police station, bathrooms and more than 250 parking spaces are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the area, a 72,000-gallon cistern was built, a system with a well with a capacity of 200 gallons per minute and automatic irrigation sprinklers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The surrounding houses were painted and hundreds of trees were planted as part of the project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diario Libre congratulated the CAASD for providing a two-for-one solution \u2013 resolving environmental and health issues and providing public space for recreation to the nearby six heavily populated neighborhoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
