President Luis Abinader was in Barahona on Wednesday, 3 January 2024 to receive the first phase of the repairs of the Barahona to Enriquillo road. The renovations encompassed the construction of the San Rafael Lookout with a panoramic view of the multicolored blues of Caribbean Sea. The improvements also include general rainwater drainage of the road, the construction of the Maniel River bridge and the repaving of 20.5 km of the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The construction of the road section by Inversores del Caribe (IDC), at a cost of RD$1.5 billion, coincides with the big steps spearheaded by the Abinader administration to kickstart mass tourism in the Cabo Rojo and Bahia de las Aguilas areas in Pedernales province in the southwest. Resorts are under construction and on Thursday, 4 January 2024, the first cruise ship, the Norwegian Pearl, is expected at the new Cabo Rojo terminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first phase is part of complete roadworks that call for the reconstruction of 45.5 km in Barahona. The next phases should be completed by April 2024, announced the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government highlighted that the Enriquillo-Pedernales and Cabo Rojo-Cueva de Pescadores roads, both in the advanced process of completion, will reduce the ground arrival time from Barahona to the beautiful beaches of the area. When in Barahona, President Abinader said that the road will also benefit farm ventures in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
