Several times presidential candidate for the Alianza Pais minority party, Guillermo Moreno was proclaimed candidate for senator for the National District for the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) on Sunday, 14 January 2024. During the same event, the Alianza Pais, proclaimed President Luis Abinader the presidential candidate for the Alianza Pais, the leading minority party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreno had words of recognition for the incumbent senator for the PRM for the National District, Faride Raful. Raful had aspired to seek reelection but accepted her party’s decision to name Moreno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreno said he will compete against Omar Fernandez, best known as the son of three-term President Leonel Fernandez. Fernandez had a first term as deputy for the National District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the ceremony to make official the alliance between Alianza Pais and the Partido Revolucionario Moderno, Moreno described the alliance between the two parties as one of “steel.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreno, who is now a candidate for the Senate of the National District for the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), took the oath from Abinader, who promised to work with the values that have characterized Alianza Pa\u00eds and go against corruption and impunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am going to legislate seriously. To supervise seriously, so that there really is a real division of powers. To seriously represent a citizenry that often has no voice or representation,\u201d said Moreno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, he assured that Alianza Pa\u00eds decided to support President Luis Abinader \u201cfor his more than three years of administration, in which, like rarely in our history, a president has committed to transparency, honesty and democratic institutionality. And those are not words, but facts that are there in the conscience of the Dominican people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreno has been Leonel Fernandez’s most critical politician. During the proclamation, he stated: \u201cI can assure you that the government party, now converted into a two-headed snake, which Congress and the Supreme Court of Justice subjected to its control, will not return. Those who associated with Odebrecht to commit the grossest acts of corruption will not return. Those who joined the Tucanos, those from Sun Land, those who created foundations based on commissions from state contractors, those will not return.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreno is the president of the Alianza Pais political party. Moreno sought the presidency of the Republic for Alianza Pais in the elections of 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020. His best performance was in the 2016 election when his candidacy received more than 84,000 votes, or about 1.83% of the total, to take the lead among minority parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Leonel Fernandez presidency, Moreno served as National District prosecutor from 1996 to 1997. Subsequently, he would become one of the most outspoken critics of corruption in the Fernandez administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 2024 senatorial race, he will be running against Omar Fernandez, son of former President Leonel Fernandez. Omar Fernandez had a first term as deputy and now his father\u2019s party has named him candidate to the senator seat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also a university professor of law, Moreno prosecuted the former President Leonel Fernandez in court for several years. The case against Fernandez and the Fundaci\u00f3n Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode) for alleged corruption and asset laundering would be filed by then National District prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso in 2013. Reynoso is today an adjunct Attorney General.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the first presidential term of Leonel Fern\u00e1ndez, Guillermo Moreno was appointed prosecutor of the National District in 1996, a position he held until 1997.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
