A team of doctors from the Santiago Metropolitan Hospital (Homs), headed by thoracic surgeon Jonathan Vargas, successfully performed three robotic lobectomies for lung cancer for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lobectomies are added to the more than 1,700 robotic surgical interventions that have been performed in Homs, with optimal results, no mortality, and complications that are well below the international average, in almost 11 years of experience, Homs spokespeople explained, as reported in El Caribe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe continue to advance and set the standard in robotic surgery in the Dominican Republic for the benefit of all Dominicans and international patients. There are now six specialties that perform robotic procedures with the most recent inclusion of thoracic surgery. This is in addition to urological, oncological, obesity, gynecological and colorectal surgeries,\u201d explained the director of the robotic surgery program and deputy director of HOMS, H\u00e9ctor S\u00e1nchez Navarro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the interventions, Dr. Vargas was accompanied by the international expert in thoracic robotic surgery Luis Herrera, in addition to the specialists from Homs, Juan F\u00e9lix Capell\u00e1n, director of surgery, and Jos\u00e9 \u00c1lvarez Torres, medical director of the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vargas said that lung cancer is the leading cause of death from cancer worldwide, so, in the event of possible symptoms such as persistent cough, difficulty breathing and chest pain, it is important to attend a medical consultation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The advantage of robotic intervention is that there is less likelihood for bleeding and infection, the most common complication of surgery. In addition, the hospital stay is shorter and recovery is much faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
