{"id":211004,"date":"2024-02-12T07:39:58","date_gmt":"2024-02-12T11:39:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dr1.com\/news\/?p=211004"},"modified":"2024-02-12T08:41:57","modified_gmt":"2024-02-12T12:41:57","slug":"micro-business-study-pinpoints-too-costly-redtape","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dr1.com\/news\/2024\/02\/12\/micro-business-study-pinpoints-too-costly-redtape\/","title":{"rendered":"Micro-business study pinpoints too costly red tape"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img src=\"https:\/\/dr1.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Micronegocios-Listin-Diario-1024x681.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-211084\" width=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dr1.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Micronegocios-Listin-Diario-1024x681.png 1024w, https:\/\/dr1.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Micronegocios-Listin-Diario-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/dr1.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Micronegocios-Listin-Diario-768x511.png 768w, https:\/\/dr1.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Micronegocios-Listin-Diario.png 1088w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 706px) 89vw, (max-width: 767px) 82vw, 740px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Dominican Republic, most people are employed in small entities known as \u201cmicro-businesses.\u201d The definition of a micro-business is \u201cno more than 10 employees, and gross incomes of less than RD$9,118, 990.74 per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For years, it has been known that more than 50% of all employees are not registered with any government agency for social security or health benefits, and this is known as the \u201cinformal\u201d sector. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent study, sponsored by the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the Business Confederation of the Dominican Republic (Copardom) now shows that most of these small enterprises choose not to register their employees because of the costs associated with being formally registered. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study reveals that a major factor behind the lack of enthusiasm for government registration is the bureaucratic labyrinth that needs to be traveled. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To carry out the study, over 1,000 businesses of different sizes were surveyed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the question of whether registering the company is too much paperwork, both those operating in the informal sector and those already in the formal sector said red tape is a major drawback.
