Now Lanco Dominicana, a major paint and sealant company, is joining with the Listin Diario newspaper to back the multi-million dollar Interamerican Development Bank&#8217;s Program for Tourism and Urban Development of the Colonial Zone to improve the historic center of the city of Santo Domingo and integrate locals with the effort. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two will publish a booklet describing the monuments of the historic area. They will also sponsor educational programs to tell teachers and students about the oldest part of the oldest city in the New World and explain the beautification process now underway in the Colonial City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project includes the work of noted technicians and architects and experts in the restoration of colonial edifices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IDB program also has funds to train the staff of the future that will maintain the historic buildings. One of the more curious aspects of all this is the laboratory examination of the materials used in the actual construction of the buildings, since the stone was mined relatively close by the current site, but some materials used for the mortar were imported from Spain.
