The executive director of the Dominican Port Authority (Apordom), Jean Luis Rodr\u00edguez announced the start of works to turn the San Pedro de Macor\u00eds into a modern terminal so the Spanish ferry company Balearia can operate weekly ferry trips to Mayag\u00fcez in Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New infrastructure will improve the conditions of the ports in both San Pedro de Macoris and Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The head of Apordom, Jean Luis Rodr\u00edguez, highlighted the positive outcome of the US$100 million investment. “This work is first a vision of President Luis Abinader, an advance for the entire region and the country,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his part, Juan Adolfo Utor Mart\u00ednez, president of Balearia, maintained that the new service represents a key driver for the progress, socioeconomic development and connectivity of both the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Balearia has more than a decade with the successful operation of similar ferry routes between the United States and the Bahamas. \u201cWe have great interest in continuing to expand our business model in the Caribbean area,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new multifunctional passenger terminal will be built in the port of San Pedro de Macor\u00eds. Likewise, works will start in an area of 100,000 square meters in the Port of Mayag\u00fcez, Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new port facilities are important advances in technology, to promote the mobility of passengers and merchandise between the Antilles, giving new access to European markets and boosting tourism and trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ferry service will enables the daily transportation of passengers, vehicles and merchandise. The Balearia ship will travel 133 nautical miles from Mayaguez to San Pedro de Macoris and have a duration of six hours. A Balearia ship can transport around 1,000 passengers and 350 vehicles and 300 freight containers in each voyage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
