National District Mayor Carolina Mej\u00eda announced on 24 April 2024 upon swearing in for a second term the construction of the Paseo 30 de Mayo and expansion of Malec\u00f3n Sports areas on the southwestern side of the Caribbean Sea boulevard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first phase of the Malecon Deportivo was delivered in December 2023 and has been very popular with city residents. It encompasses sports facilities on the seaside of the Malecon from Avenida N\u00fa\u00f1ez de C\u00e1ceres to Avenida Luper\u00f3n on the western side. The area is a protected area known as the Parque Nacional Litoral Sur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sea-fronting park areas are transforming public spaces into areas where people can go for leisurely walks. People of all ages engage in sports and recreational activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement consolidates the Malecon as a main attraction for tourists and residents in the capital city. Earlier this year, the city government reverted its position of backing the installation of a Chinese-owned quick-sex motel on the western side of the city, and instead now backs neighborhood groups that had presented their case to the Superior Administrative Court (TSA) that approved a penalty of RD$400,000 per day if the company building the motel resumes the construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mej\u00eda also said upon swearing in on Wednesday, 24 April that her city government would rehabilitate the Enriquillo Park and its surroundings. The area operates as a city transportation hub near the Avenida Duarte shopping area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mej\u00eda spoke of the construction of a new market in the Los Guandules low-income neighborhood with Gualey to the north and Guachupita to the south and the Ozama River to the East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mej\u00eda said she had presented these three projects as part of her campaign promises into the 18 February 2024 election. Mej\u00eda has been known for renovating several parks all throughout the National District, in high, middle and low-income sectors. For the renovations, she has reached out to big-business to stretch the city government budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mej\u00eda also addressed the importance of comprehensive management of solid wastes of the capital city. She spoke of the need for a new landfill and for the modernizing of garbage collection and the use of new technologies to profit from waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The National District currently produces about 2,500 tons of solid waste of which 30% corresponds to organic waste, while 60% is organic residues, especially cardboard, paper, wood, plastic and glass,” she remarked. She said the new sanitary landfill would be built near Duquesa, the large landfill that services the municipalities in Greater Santo Domingo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also announced municipal funeral services will be extended to the low income neighborhoods of San Carlos, Los R\u00edos and Villa Juana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before assuming her second term, Mejia toured Spain where she met with local authorities of the city governments of Sevilla and Barcelona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to her role as the capital city mayor, Mejia is also the secretary general of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). She is the daughter of former President Hipolito Mej\u00eda (2000-2004).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
