There will now be only three majority parties in Congress. These will receive the lion’s share of political party funding \u2013 Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), People\u2019s Force (Fuerza del Pueblo \u2013 FP), and the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fourth majority party into the 2024 election, the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) and its presidential presidential candidate Miguel Vargas received but 0.45% of the vote. In the 2024 electoral year, the PRD as a majority party had received RD$500 million in funding from the National Budget for their political campaign activities, the same as the PRM, FP and PLD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking during the post-election coverage of the presidential election, political analyst Rosario Espinal said that the PRD has gone the way of what she calls the “dominating party political system” that has prevailed through the years in the Dominican Republic. She was referring to the now practically extinct Partido Reformista Social Cristiano (PRSC), the dominating party with the late President Joaqu\u00edn Balaguer (1966-1970, 1970-1974, 1974-1978, 1986-1990, 1990-1994, 1994-1996). The PRSC in the 2024 general election just kept the elected seat of Ramon Rogelio Genao as senator for La Vega. The PRSC ran in this election as an ally of the PRM. She also referred to the long years of domination of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) from 2004 to 2020 (presidencies of Leonel Fernandez and Danilo Medina, in addition to the first President of Leonel Fernandez from 1996-2000).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both the PLD and the PRM are offspring of the now practically defunct PRD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The PRD was never absolute majority in Congress as were the PRSC and the PLD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
