The Presidency announced the opening of a bid to build the third line of the Santo Domingo skylift system. The first was across the Ozama River; the second connects to Line 2 of the Metro from Los Alcarrizos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This time, the mass transit system would connect Duarte Highway Km 9 with the Port of Haina. Km 9 is a major intersection point with connections to the Santo Domingo bypass roads to the south, East and north.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A tender published by the Trust for the Development of the Mass Transportation System of the Dominican Republic (Fitram) calls on all interested parties, duly domiciled in the Dominican Republic, to present proposals for the contracting of the design, manufacturing, construction, assembly and commissioning of line 3 of the aerial cable system for mass public passenger transportation in Santo Domingo West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Line 3 of the Santo Domingo Cable Car will be built in Santo Domingo Oeste and will connect kilometer 9 of the Duarte Highway with the low-income sectors of Buenos Aires de Herrera, \u201cPintura\u201d on 27 de Febrero, Ensanche Altagracia, El Caf\u00e9 de Herrera, the S\u00e1nchez highway and the Port of Haina. It represents an investment of nearly US$250 million and will have a capacity between 4,000 to 6,000 passengers per hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Santo Domingo Integrated Transportation System (SIT-SD) is an initiative traffic congestion in Greater Santo Domingo. It incorporates new modes of transportation focused on the mobility of more than a million users of public transport and seeks to reduce private vehicle traffic on city roads. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SIT-SD includes the physical, technological and fare integration of different modalities of mass transportation, including the newly started Santo Domingo tram, line 3 of the Santo Domingo Cable Car that will operate in Santo Domingo Oeste, the Santo Domingo metropolitan train, the San Crist\u00f3bal train, the incorporation of urban interchanges, as well as the construction of 3 urban bus terminals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project seeks to reduce vehicular traffic to 1,481,340 vehicles, compared to the 3,091,000 at present. This will imply a reduction in road congestion from 8 km\/hr to 15 km\/hr, equivalent to 50% less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement comes at a time when the government has stepped up the pace to finish the Km 9 intersection roadworks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
