This is the tropics. Yes, it rained, but it was short-lasting and city streets did not flood nor were tow trucks called in. Albeit, it is better to be prepared than to lament.

Now the Weather Office (Onamet) is forecasting that the passing of a tropical wave that is moving swiftly westward across the Windward Passage and the influence of an upper-level trough will continue to dominate our atmospheric conditions. These weather systems are responsible for scattered showers, thunderstorms, and isolated gusts of wind across our territory through the night.

Onamet forecasts showers, with skies clearing by the evening. The areas under the passing weather systems are Greater Santo Domingo and the provinces of La Vega, San José de Ocoa, Monseñor Nouel, Santiago, Azua, San Juan, Elías Piña, Dajabón, Santiago Rodríguez, Valverde, Independencia, Bahoruco, Barahona, and Pedernales. Meanwhile, areas including La Altagracia, San Pedro de Macorís, La Romana, Monte Plata, Sánchez Ramírez, Duarte, María Trinidad Sánchez, Samaná, San Cristóbal, Peravia.

As of Wednesday, the tropical wave will have move away from our forecast area. However, Onamet says that the lingering effects of the upper-level trough, coupled with local heating and orographic influences, will maintain moist and unstable conditions.

Temperatures will remain hot. Onamet recommends people drink plenty of water, wear light-colored clothing, stay in well-ventilated spaces, and avoid direct sun exposure between 11am and 4pm.

Read more in Spanish:
Onamet

10 July 2024

On Tuesday, 9 July 2024, at least in the capital city, people braced themselves for an afternoon of torrential rains and flooding.
