Ministry of Environment has contracted with US caves expert George Veni to carry out a study on the Cuevas de Borbon (Pomier) anthropological reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minister of Environment Miguel Ceara Hatton met with Veni to highlight the actions taken to protect the cultural heritage site. Taino Indians left pictographs within the cave. For decades, the cave system has been under the threat of sand extraction companies that operate in the area. Dominican cave specialist, Domingo Abreu has championed the conservation of the Pomier caves. He will be assisting Veni in the carrying out of the study. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

George Veni is a renowned American geologist and speleologist, who has served as executive director of the US National Cave and Karst Research Institute (NCKRI) from 2011 to 2023. He is widely recognized as an expert on caves, having conducted extensive research on cave systems, karst hydrology, and geotourism. Veni has written numerous papers and books on cave-related topics and has received several awards for his contributions to the field. His expertise has been sought by governments, universities, and the cave exploration community, making him a prominent figure in the world of cave research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was a member of the bureau of the International Union of Speleology from 2002-2022 with the last five years serving as its president. He was also chairman of the Multidisciplinary Conference on Sinkholes and the Engineering and Environmental Impacts of Karst from 2011-2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
