The Executive Board of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) has approved the nomination of Agust\u00edn Burgos to fill the vacancy of the Mayor of La Vega. The position became vacant when incumbent Kelvin Cruz was named Minister of Sports, and his deputy mayor resigned. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The board overwhelmingly recommended to President Luis Abinader that Burgos be appointed as the new mayor, N Digital reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The list of candidates, which includes Burgos, would be sent to President Abinader on Wednesday, 18 September 2024 for his consideration. Burgos awaits the President\u2019s endorsement of the PRM\u2019s recommendation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

N Digital reports that in a show of unity, Burgos recently met with Kelvin Cruz, amid speculation about a power struggle for control of the La Vega mayoralty. Completing the candidate list are Danny Holgu\u00edn, the operational director of the municipality and PRM\u2019s local president, along with councilman Esteban Garc\u00eda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should Burgos be appointed, he will vacate his position as a PRM deputy for La Vega, succeeding Cruz, who has been appointed as Minister of Sports. Burgos currently serves as the provincial president of PRM-La Vega and has been elected to Congress three times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under Law 176-07, governing the National District and Municipalities, President Abinader has the authority to appoint the new mayor of La Vega, following Cruz’s promotion and the resignation of Vice Mayor Amparo Custodio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Article 64 of Law 176-07, the vacancy for mayor is to be filled by the vice mayor, who will take an oath before the Municipal Council in a special session convened for this purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The PRM will then need to choose another party member to fill the position of Burgos in the Chamber of Deputies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
