The case against Elizabeth Silverio who TV investigative journalist Nuria Piera denounced as personifying a neuroscientist is being heard in court in Santo Domingo. Silverio ran the Kogland Center and her office walls were full of her degrees from international organizations. She was so convincing that she even was chosen to advise the Chamber of Deputies in the drafting of the national autism law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kogland Center for autistic children had a waiting list. She was so good at what she did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, she faces charges in court. The center was closed and several of the families suffered after their routines were disrupted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former deputy Yuderka de la Rosa, one of many parents of children with autism affected by the situation, calls for justice to set a precedent that penalizes child abuse. Serving as a witness during the court hearings, she said there are others who like Silverio pose as pseudo-experts. She speaks of her own experience with her son admitted to Centro Kogland. She said he has regressed to the age of 5 years. He is 22 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I hope justice is levied because this case has to set a precedent. It is not only Elizabeth. There are many and more Elizabeth Silverios in the Dominican Republic,” said the former legislator. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
